Michael Wolff, 2018
Wolff gets incredible access inside the most comically inept and disorganized White Houses in history. What follows are some of the most entertaining first hand accounts you’ll ever hear out of our highest level of government. What made them think it was a good idea to give Wolff a spot on the couch, nobody will ever know, but I’m glad they did.
The book is full of quotes that will at times induce a cringe, take your breath away and make you chuckle. Alternatively the book also has far more analysis on the psyche of Trump that I was expecting. Personally, I could have done with less of this but it does provide an illuminating window into how the worlds of politics and media are mutually dependent.
Wolff was roundly criticized for exaggerating, making knowingly false suggestions and breaching the protection of off the record conversations. With all of this being true, none of his themes are surprising and the book lands the intending point.
While still enjoyable, I found the book similar to a movie that gives away all the good parts in the preview. I failed to learn much new about any of the main characters that the news hadn’t already illustrated for me.
If you’re ever wondering what the hell is going on when you see Trump speak, this book will answer many of your questions.
